HP 6031A 20V/120A Power Supply

Repair and calibration of a 20V / 120A power supply.

This is a power supply that I bought from ebay for $208. This was $3,400 (1989) when it was new in 1989. Today that would be about $8.9k. I bought this as my high current supply. It can do 120A. Lets see what’s wrong with it.

This is the power supply opened. Before powering it up, I do a visual inspection. “Don’t turn it on, tear it apart!”

Top cover removed

I do happen to see some bad capacitors. The plastic is cracked. If you know about this, then it is good I found this before powering up. These RIFA caps are known for blowing up

These are all the RIFA caps I replaced.

With all the caps replaced, it was uneventful. It powers up and works as it should. A modern new equivalent of a supply like this goes for around $4200. I need the capability but I do not need the precision and the reliability as it would have when new. This was a great find. I will continue to gamble on ebay. 🙂
